Thanks to our Sponsors

they have helped us to make ohana a reality

our wonderful sponsors were integral to the success of this garden.

It's fair to say that the full-on 60's Beach Pad concept of Ohana was quite unique for MIFGS (or any garden, really) and the Sponsors that put their hands up took a risk with such an out-there idea - their tenacity, quality control and commitment to the project paid off in one of the most talked about gardens in recent years at MIFGS.

Many of the products and methods used in Ohana were brand new, but we're sure they will become part of the landscape design lexicon in years to come. We're very proud to be a part of that!

Paving and Cladding

Stone Outdoors

ENGINEERED CONCRETE PAVERS THAT OOZE STYLE

Stone Outdoors are a Melbourne-based engineered paving company - their range has the soft textures and mottled colours of natural stone, but with a more uniform, modern line. The range is expansive, but they team at Stone Outdoors are also very involved in custom making paving sizes, shapes and colours for a unique story.

The Ohana Garden pavers have all been designed and made here in Melbourne, and there is no better demonstration of collaboration under tight timelines working to achieve a paving palette that is truly one-of-a-kind.

Wall cladding was created especially for Ohana by infusing Erskine by Stone Outdoors with blue/green aggregate to reference sea glass found along the shoreline. The terrazzo effect and stacked laying pattern is pure 60s.

The Wavy Pavers' ribbons of curves were designed to evoke the feeling of being at the beach, with wet sand ripples as inspiration.

The quartz look of the pavers really illustrated the sandy beach feeling - Erskine colour was created especially for Ohana by Stone Outdoors

The 'Wavy Pavers' gave the appearance of softening up the paved areas and creating an optical 3D effect

Mosaic and Pool Tiles

MAKING A SPLASH WITH GLASS MOSAIC

Glass and porcelain tiles make a stunning addition to any pool, wet area of other feature; the colour and surface variations  ensure that the look is ever changing and reflects light in myriad ways - it's very special details like these that make a project really sing.

Our mosaic mural 'Leilani' was carefully hand-crafted by our friends at Swimple. The swimming pool and spillover tiles are Swimple's Barrier Reef glass mosaic tiles, and some of Leilani's tiles are also from that range - just a small detail that makes the two elements blend well together.

Leilani - the star of the garden and it's main focal point - she set the tone for Ohana, and heralds the essence of fun!

The cool blues of Swimple's 'Barrier Reef' tiles literally encroach into the living areas of the garden - as water spills over the 2 sides of the pool, it's very hard to resist jumping in!

The whole 4.6m high and 3m wide surface of the mosaic is all done painstakingly in hand cut glass tiles - another element of careful workmanship of which Swimple should be proud!

CUSTOMISING COMFORT

We have been lucky enough to have Derek Martin and the team at Inform Upholstery + Design become a part of Ohana. We love their work, as they are hands down the only place to go for superior outdoor (and indoor, if you must!) cushions, seats, daybeds, ottomans and all things luxurious. For Ohana, they worked closely with us to give us some Sixties flair in fabrics by Charles Parsons, and their quirky ottomans add some extra fun to the dining area.

The large and comfortable lounge level was made possible by the fabulous outdoor foams and fabrics used by Inform Upholstery + Design - the base cushions on the lounge area echo the pool colour, with a bit of flash in the lime piping around the seams - this lime is carried on through the rear cushions and the ottomans in the dining area.

This playful retro fabric by Charles Parsons is a perfect compliment to the foliage colour schemes and added luxurious comfort to the lounge setting. A perfectly aligned stripe is a thing of beauty!

These funky upholstered ottomans gave the surfboard dining space added flair and let the timber malibu table shine. Fabrics by Charles Parsons.

Lump Sculpture Studio

REFLECTING the moods and shapes of the sea

Lump Sculpture Studio have a never ending supply of wonderful creations - sculpture, cladding, screens, furniture, lighting - you name it. They will do something great with it!

For Ohana, we have collaborated to work with the 'retro surf chic' look on a number of pieces:

- the Burner Table is in a sleek dark ocean blue to match the pool, with the bio-ethanol insert reminiscent of a 60's surf movie clam bake

- the bar area Fish Scales arbour roof is finished in pearlescent white to pay homage to the shells of the sea.

We are also privileged to be the first to display Lump's new Bullet Planter - available  in a range of colours as well as in brass, but for Ohana we colour matched with the coffee table and the arbour.

The Fish Scale arbour by Lump really breaks up the backdrop without being 'too' solid - and has a transformative effect at night.

The rolled steel coffee table is powder coated to match the pool and the lounge seat cushions, and features a bio ethanol burner to take off the chill and add some beach bonfire atmosphere.

The Electric Crew

TWICE THE GARDEN

The Electric Crew are experts in getting the most out of any outdoor (or indoor) space.

A well-lit garden space gives you enjoyment around the clock, adding an extra layer to the familiar daytime space. Good garden lighting creates drama, adds depth, and so much more. The Electric Crew have been kind enough to demonstrate just what a difference a well-lighted garden space can make.

Lighting up the pool spillover walls and creating nighttime drama.

Illumination gives any garden twice the value - it may not be the best time to be out there amongst it, but it can still be a wonderful feature.

PLANTS WITH PURPOSE

Our friends at Dans Wholesale Plants have one of the best ranges of tropical style plants in Melbourne. We're thrilled to have them be a part of Ohana. The foliage textures we were able to create to give Ohana it's unique look were integral to the project.

We were truly fortunate to get these lovely frangipanis from Dan's Plants - they were one of the stars of the garden, with literally every second question being frangipani-related throughout the show. What a standout they are in any garden, and they looked brilliant with beds of Kalanchoe 'Flap Jacks', Crassula, Agave and Lomandra 'Little Pal' to really bring out their mottled trunk textures.

Kalanchoe 'Flap Jacks' were an early choice to create a bit of mystique and interest to the low-maintenance planting scheme.

A mixture of semi tropical and succulents allowed us to add hints of a coral reef as well as the deep foliage colours and texture of the tropics.

DETAILS MAKE THE DIFFERENCE

We were lucky enough to meet the guys at Tree To Sea and they were kind enough to indulge our idea of having a genuine timber malibu surfboard serve as a dining table - really taking the beach theme that extra mile, huh?

These boards are made the traditional way form Paulownia Wood, with timber ribs, and surf like nothing else. Tree to Sea run workshops so you can make your own (with their assistance), or they'll make one for you. Get ready for Summer!

Super chilled out dining with family and friends  - there's nothing better than that.

To get that beach bonfire feeling (or at least some of the atmosphere) we went with the EcoSmart Fire burner dropped into the coffee table. It's a great way to get the feeling of a beach party without the hassle, and gives off plenty of heat to take the evening chill off the air.

The EcoSmart Fire bioethanol burner fits snugly into the coffee table - this is the BK5 Square model, which gives you several hours of burning time - and takes the edge off a cool evening.
